We are all very excited with the music choices for this year’s Star in Their Eyes. This year the senior orchestra will accompany the choir with “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher”, “California Dreamin’” and “Born This Way”

We will accompany two of the acts, The Brotherhood of Man singing “Save All Your Kisses For Me”, and The Crystals will sing “Da do Ron Ron” and will play by ourselves “ My Way”

Here is plenty of advance notice for you to clear up your diaries for the few rehearsal we have leading up to SITE.

Please note there are no lunchtime rehearsals and we have set up two extended after school sessions.

Parents and Students, have you ever wanted to learn to sing?

In February 2012 we are privileged to welcome Gloria Ellis to Island school. Gloria recently performed in Hong Kong as part of ‘The Carmen Project’, where she coached students and also sang the title role of Carmen.
Gloria is a professional opera singer with the Scottish Opera Company, UK. Immensely popular with the students, she is an outstanding singing teacher, coach and performer. Personally, I would say that her talent and enthusiasm were inspirational, and the opportunity to work with her should be grasped with both hands.

We are delighted to be able to offer parents, and friends of Island School the opportunity to have a one off singing lesson with Gloria. Whether you are a complete beginner, or would consider yourself a good amateur this is a great chance to take your singing to the next level, or learn the basics of breathing and voice production.
Or even, discover if you have a voice. You can book a session by yourself, or bring a friend along.

THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT, UNUSUAL CHRISTMAS GIFT – GIFT VOUCHERS ARE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST.
Cost: $800 for one session. All sessions will take place in Island School at a mutually convenient time.

To all members of Senior Orchestra,Ms Trevenna and I are excited to launch our new elite ensemble, called Chamber Orchestra which will join forces with Claudia Lau (8R) who was last year’s First Prize winner of our inaugural Lower School Piano competition. We will accompany her superb performance of the beautiful Mozart Piano Concerto number 21 in our upcoming concert on 30th November as well prepare for a Christmas concert with the ronouned HK Male Voice choir in St. John’s Cathedral on December 6th. This is an amazing opportunity to challenge our most gifted and talented orchestral musicians to produce classical and seasonal music of the highest caliber. We will rehearse on Tuesdays after school as soon after the audition process is complete.We would like invite potential candidate to audition for the following few vacancies:3 flutes, minimum standard ABRSM grade 73 clarinets, one of which will be bass clarinet, minimum standard ABRSM grade 7.4 violins minimum standard grade 84 cellos minimum standard ABRSM grade 6Woodwind auditions are on Tuesday Lunchtime, string auditions are on Wednesday lunchtime. Seven ESF Secondary Schools performed a Chinese version of Carmen

The Scottish Opera was invited by English Schools Foundation to perform the renowned opera Carmen with seven ESF secondary schools. It was the first of its kind in Hong Kong and a cross-subject performing arts project.

Sing Tao was invited by ESF to attend the show with over a hundred parents and students. The Carmen Project was different from the traditional opera, the background was changed from Spain to China. Chinese music, with components such as Chinese flutes, dulcimers, drums and erhus, was added to one of the chapters, along with traditional Chinese lion dance.

Sing Tao talked to three parents after the show. All of them were pleasantly surprised by the Chinese element in the story. Sha Tin College Year 11 student Ting-Wai Cheng told Sing Tao that it was her first time performing in an opera, one of the challenges was the wide range of the songs. With the elements of acting in opera, the challenge was to practice not to laugh. Cheng said that they had only rehearsed with Scottish Opera for five days before the actual performance.

Sui-Ching Yue from South Island School said that students from seven ESF secondary schools worked well in this project. He also said that the original lyrics was in Spanish, in this performance it was translated into English, the gripping of rhythm and tone was the most challenging part.

Over two hundred students were involved in this project, everyone had their role – singers, orchestra musicians, composers, lyric writers, costume and stage designers and photographers. Costume designer Vanessa Yip of South Island School said that working with a professional group allowed her to gain experience of what fashion design was really like in the real world. She said that it took only two days to produce the costume.

Debra Jones, Head of Music of South Island School, told Sing Tao that it was the first musical event ESF has had, she was thrilled to have seven members of the Scottish Opera working with the students in the project. It was an amazing experience for both students and teachers.

Vennes Thiyaka, another music teacher also thought that it was a great opportunity for students to learn how to cooperate with others and organise events, which helped them build their confidence.

Scottish Opera Project – 19th – 23rd September 2011

Over 20 students from Island School wereprivaileged to be selected to work with professional singers, composers,directors and stage managers on a very individual interpretation of Bizets‘Carmen’.

Chorus members worked with professionalsingers Paul Keohone and Gloria Ellis on many challenging chorus numbersincluding the ‘Toreador Song’, “Chanson Boheme’ and the famous ‘Habenara’. Thequality of the singing was outstanding, particularly in the numbers they wereperforming with Paul, and Gloria who also played the parts of the Toreador andCarmen.

The orchestra members tackled thechallenging score of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ with accuracy, musicality and impressivetechnical ability. The also played a composition which was created by studentsduring the weeks. The composition group had a fantastic experience working withprofessional composer Karen MacIver.

The week culminated in two performances atthe Drama Theatre in the Acadamy of Performing Arts.

“It was amazing to have the experience of performingin a professional venue, and to have the opportunity to see how a real operapieces together.”

The auditions take place next Monday 19th September or Tuesday 20th at lunchtime in 241.You can come along on any of these days. You need to prepare a short piece which displays current playing standard.

You do not need to attend these auditions if
1.You are in Year 7, 8, 9 AND you have already been auditioned in your Music lesson by myself or Ms. Trevenna.
2. You were already in Senior Orchestra last year.
3. You currently study GCSE Music.

Island School Lower School Piano Competition 2011

On Thursday 16^th June, Island School saw it’s first ever piano competition. Ten students from years 7-9 performed a wide range of very challenging piano music from Allegro con brio – first movement from sonata in Bb, Op. 24, No. 2 by Clementi to Presto, third movement from sonatina, Op.13, No. 1 by Kabelevsky The ten students had been chosen from a large number of lower school students who competed in rounds over three lunchtime in open recitals. The esteemed judge for the competition was Dr. Michael Ryan, who lectures in Music at Hong Kong Baptist University. He has a long history with ESF and Island School, having taught at KVG, and his children being Island School alumni. We are very grateful to him for his insightful and knowledgeable feedback, and for putting all of the finalists at their ease.

Many congratulations to the winner of the competition Claudia Lau who played the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C minor, BWV 826, and to the runner up Julia Colfer who performed Rondo Capriccioso by Mendelssohn. Congratulations are also extended to John Tang who performed Scherzo in Bb by Schubert. John was awarded the adjudicators prize for his understated and highly musical performance.

Not only was this a wonderful event, but a fitting conclusion to another successful year, brimming with Music making.

The Jazz Tellers

On Thursday 26^th May, a group of young jazz musicians from Berklee College of music came to Island School and performed for the year 10 Music students. Lee Dynes on guitar, Nathan Wong on the drums and Callum Mackenzie on alto saxophone played their own semi-improvised compositions and impressive jazz pieces. The skilled musicians talked to us about the fun and amazing time they have at Berklee, where two of our year 13 students are headed to next year (Hannah Pho and Jason Wu). They talked about the high quality theory teaching from professionals, the relaxed and entertaining courses in which students can choose their favourite area of study or genre and the different personalities of people who choose different courses.

The pieces they played included very virtuostic playing from the saxophone, clean and consistent plucking from the acoustic-electric guitar and rapid playing from the drummer. Complicated and impressive variations of timing and rhythm were used to the maximum and unique jazz harmony came up everywhere. One of their pieces – composed by Callum Mackenzie – was in odd metre, 11/4. It sounded very complicated indeed and at one point the band played two beats per bar, then three beats per bar, then four, five, six, seven, eight and then finally a conclusive jump to back to the 11/4 meter. The way the band played so comfortably and effectively together, not making a single slip up amazed every student.

At the end of the performance, the Jazz Tellers gave out leaflets with details of gigs in Hong Kong and encouraged us to see them play outside school. I went with a group of friends to Lan Kwai Fong to see them and with another outstanding performance; we were given free CDs of their album. The Jazz Tellers have inspired many of us GCSE students to pursue music in the future, especially in Jazz and Blues. We were very privileged to see them play and to be inspired by such wonderful young musicians.

Scottish Opera

In September 2011, we are most fortunate to have Scottish Opera joining us for a week to work on an educational project. Scottish Opera are a world-renowned, professional opera company from the UK. Over the course of the 19^th to 23^rd September, they will be working with our students develop a performance of the opera ‘Carmen’ by Georges Bizet, using key choruses from the original opera, around which the students can use their creativity to build a whole new work.

Choir: Important changes!
Rehearsal time has be changed to 9:30 - 13:00.
Please meet at Island School gate to catch the 8:45 bus to Shatin College.
There will be a bus bringing you back at 13:00.

Orchestra:
There will be NO bus from Island School on the day.
You are to make your own transportation arrangements.
The rehearsal takes place at South Island School from 9am - 5pm.

Ticket price: $120 (adult) $60 (students)

Participating schools include Discovery College, Island School, King George V School, Renaissance College, ShaTin College, South Island School, West Island School.

The ESF Orchestra & Choir Concert tickets are now available for purchase from both the URBTIX and via the ESF Centre. You can also download the Tickets Booking Form for purchase via the ESF Centre and special promotion is available only via the Centre.
